Miro brings AI superpowers to athletes and brands in the sports industry. Miro’s core product, RunnerTag AI (www.runnertag.com), combines deep learning, computer vision and a scalable cloud infrastructure to identify millions of athletes in events across Asia, Europe & North America. By simply analyzing a single photo or video frame, Miro’s AI can instantly identify athletes, discover 1:1 brand preferences, and suggest training and equipment to improve athlete performance.
We talked to members of Miro’s team about working in such a hot sector, the startup’s culture and perks, and some all-important advice for job applicants. You can watch the videos and browse their open job opportunities in Miro's Company Profile or read on below.
AI is one of the hottest sectors around, with a range of large companies involved in the industry. However, as Miro’s CTO & Co-founder, Jamie Wild, explains “a lot of really interesting work is taking place is smaller companies like Miro – and we’re really proud to be the best of what do in this field”.
For Jamie, it’s the intersection of technology and sports that’s most exciting. Miro’s key advantage here is its data: “We have a large volume of ground truth data”, says Jamie, “which is images of runners captured during races – several million of those – and we use that in order to develop and improve the computer model”. This excitement runs through the team at Miro. For Wallace, Miro’s Director of Deliver, “the most exciting part in my role is that I’m involved in a company that aims to shape the future with AI”.
Miro has a flexible work culture where success is measured by output rather than time spent in the office. Although the company welcomes remote working, its team enjoys working together in a fun and positive office environment.
Henry, Software Developer at Miro, describes office life as “relaxed – there’s no set time that we have to come in or leave but I think a lot of us come to the office anyway because we enjoy being here, we like hanging out, the banter… it’s a pretty positive environment to be in."
Everyone at Miro is passionate about the company’s product and work together as a team to solve problems. Miro’s people are given lots of responsibility and encouraged to own tasks, whilst being given full support and guidance from the company co-founders.
Wallace explains that the team are “so passionate to just constantly step up and solve problems together”. For Henry, it’s the supportive atmosphere that’s key, describing the company co-founders as a “very supportive group, much more than any other companies I’ve been at… it’s a very good learning environment”.
Miro’s team work and play together, with regular social events in Hong Kong and an annual company trip. The team last went to Chiang Mai in Thailand, where they worked in a co-working space and enjoyed activities such as cooking classes.
Alongside various sports related perks such as being gifted free running shoes each year, the company also offers employees unlimited annual leave. For Wallace, this is “the most amazing part of our perks” and ties with the company’s culture of being flexible yet encouraging ownership and responsibility.
By using AI to revolutionise the sports industry, Miro cuts across two exciting and popular sectors. Miro’s CTO & Co-founder Jamie encourages applicants to research the company and sector to “see if that grabs your interest and if it’s something that you really have a passion for”.
Previous experience as a runner or cyclist is also looked upon positively as it enables a quick understanding of what the company is trying to do and how it improves the experience of athletes. Finally, as a R&D focused startup, technical skills are key and Jamie advises candidates to “make sure you have an up to date Github and that you can present your technical skills in a clear and precise way”.
