Founded in the UK in 2013, Deliveroo’s mission is to offer customers a wide choice of high quality restaurants and bring them the best food wherever they are. Having quickly expanded to 12 countries, Deliveroo is also leading innovation in the food delivery industry with its Deliveroo Editions offering, a central kitchen concept aimed at bringing the best restaurants to more customers.
We talked to Deliveroo's Hong Kong team about the company’s culture, development opportunities and perks, and some all-important advice for job applicants. You can watch the videos and browse their open job opportunities hereor read on below.
Deliveroo operates in a competitive environment and values people who can take responsibility and ownership of tasks within a culture that puts team work above everything else. Employees enjoy strong bonds and focus on working together and helping each other out in the office.
Josh, the Head of Strategic Projects, says “to be successful at Deliveroo, you have to be able to put your hand up and take responsibility for things”. Deliveroo encourages people to take ownership and those “who thrive on taking on new things and perhaps getting out of their comfort zones will do really well”.
To thrive in this environment, Alison, one of the Senior Account Managers, appreciates the culture of team working and camaraderie. Everyone at Deliveroo “shares the same values and what we do is appreciated by everyone here”. And importantly for Alison, “we have always got each other’s back”.
Deliveroo offers employees lots of development opportunities including training courses, personality tests and many other online resources.
Jane, an Operations Manager, says “I was very surprised when I came to Deliveroo to realise that there is a lot of emphasis on personal development”. To support this, Jane explains that staff can use Deliveroo’s account with Coursera to access training on a range of topics from world leading educational institutions.
Staff learn on the job too. The happiest aspect of the job, according to Alison is that she “learns new things everyday”. While managers give freedom for employees to work things out themselves, Alison appreciates that her bosses are always on hand to help – “they will give you some advice and let you learn step by step”.
Deliveroo is committed to making sure life outside of work is just as much fun as in the office. There's no shortage of fun team activities, from bubble soccer through to team drinks and 'Fun Friday' lunches. Deliveroo also provides employees with gym subsidies, which perfectly complement all of the free food on offer.
Jane says that staff “get a lot of free food in the office, if we want to try out a new restaurant, we order in and test it out... in case you over eat you can always go to the gym and it’s good to know that the company subsidies it for you.” She believes that “Deliveroo is very committed to making sure that life outside of work is just as fun”.
Demand for jobs at Deliveroo is high so we asked Josh to give candidates insights on how to succeed. He explained that candidates have to show they “actually care about what the company is doing – start using the app and show that you are passionate about food”. Showing that you are flexible and adaptable is important as Josh outlines, “every day is a new challenge and you cannot always be sure what the outcomes are going to be so you need to be comfortable showing that you can work in that type of environment”.
In terms of attitude, Josh encourages candidates to show a “positive attitude”, as only those with a positive mindset will succeed in such a fast growing and competitive company.
