Internal Audit Manager

Reports to: Head of Internal Audit
Department: Group Internal Audit (GIA)

Internal Audit's mission is to be a high performing, engaged team, protecting and enhancing the business's value through risk-based and independent assurance, advice and insight. The role will be responsible for:
  • Assisting the Head of Internal Audit in carrying out audit assignments across the Cathay Group -- responsible for managing auditors in executing the risk-based and end-to-end audit reviews including scheduling, resource planning and utilization, responsibilities and deliverables, working paper reviews and reporting in accordance with the Internal Audit plan;
  • Ensure quality auditing, risk management and consulting services are delivered in order to provide high level of assurance over all types of risks across the Group.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Drives/promotes the vision of Group Internal Audit throughout close partnerships with management and working with the senior executives to develop a risk based 1+2 years' audit plan for the Company
  • Provides objective assurance and independent review on the adequacy and effectiveness of the Company's risk management and internal control system to safeguard assets and to share best practices
  • Assists the Head of Internal Audit to prepare high quality papers/reports for the Audit Committee meetings regularly; completes the annual audit plan as agreed by the AC
  • Conducts high standard of quality audits through understanding of business and risks and proper identification of issues. Reports are prepared timely with high quality and issues are clearly communicated and agreed with the senior management and executives with effective recommendations and solutions
  • Manages the identification and evaluation of the business's risk assessments and identifies internal control deficiencies and opportunities to improve business effectiveness and efficiency to mitigate risks
  • Performs audit reviews to verify that controls are operating through testing and interviewing techniques and documents the results in accordance with the IIA standards
  • Engages business stakeholders including identifying and understanding risks, issues and areas where internal audit work is required and communicates results of audit and consulting projects
  • Prepares draft audit reports for Head of Internal Audit's review and follow up to ensure the audit reports are issued according to the timelines set out in formal scope letter
  • Hosts pre-closing and closing meetings (when required) and shares the latest audit developments with key stakeholders promptly including operational and practical recommendations, as appropriate
  • Works independently under general direction with extensive latitude for initiative and independent judgement
  • Supervises a team of auditors and provides training, coaching and developmental feedback to them; develops talent pool for the Company
  • Establishes/regularly reviews standard audit programs to ensure they continue to be relevant and updated according to the latest business practices
  • Drives changes within the Group Internal Audit function including suggesting and implementing improvements to ways of working
  • Pursues professional development opportunities, including external and internal training and professional association memberships, and sharing information gained with the team
  • Performs any ad hoc reviews and special investigations assigned, and provides practical and effective recommendations to management in enhancing the control environment and tightening the risk exposure within the Company
  • Assists in providing advice to management in the event of new and/or modifications to standard operating procedures
  • Ensures common fraud/errors/irregular transactions are identified and investigated in timely manner as well as providing corrective action plans to mitigate exceptions
  • Monitors implementation of agreed recommendations within the committed timelines, with timely reporting of overdue items to senior management for rectification. Able to independently review and provide feedback on quality of management responses on the implementation status report/audit findings etc.
  • Assists the Head of Internal Audit to monitor and control the departmental spending

  • At least 8 years in internal/external audit, of which 3 years in internal audit managerial capacity preferably in airlines industry
  • Degree or equivalent professional qualification in Accounting / Business Administration
  • Possesses high energy level and strong work ethic with a commitment to continuous improvement in a dynamic and changing environment, striving to exceed expectations
  • Possesses the drive to quickly gain good knowledge and understanding of the policies and procedures of the Company
  • CPA, CA, CFE, CISA, CISSP and/or CIA preferred
  • Strong interpersonal, communication and presentation skills (written & verbal), including managing the middle/senior management
  • Strong analytical skills, and ability to work independently and in a matrix and remote environment
  • Meticulous and excellent audit documentation
  • Experience in forensic audit or dealing with ambiguity and complex transactions
  • Excellent problem solving ability
  • Good leadership and analytical skills
  • A team player who is self-initiated, independent and able to meet tight schedules
  • Ability to create and maintain good working relationships with teammates and all levels of staff members from various business units
